In 2011, the It’s Academic TV show celebrated its 50th anniversary in Washington DC and its 40th anniversary in Baltimore making it the longest running television quiz show (Jeopardy is second). Mac McGarry had hosted all 50 seasons in DC (another Guinness Book record), while the Baltimore host since 2005 has been Dave Zahren.
81 teams from area high schools compete for the metro championship of DC and another 81 teams for Baltimore. The metro-champions of DC and Baltimore meet in a “Superbowl” match against the Central Virginia champ (best of 9 teams).
Since 2003, Centennial has won 5 Metro Championships and 1 Superbowl. Since 2000, Howard High School won 4 Metro Championships and 3 Superbowls. Since 1998, Hammond High School won 2 Metro Championships. Howard County high schools have won the Baltimore Metro Championship 12 times from 1997 on, including 4 Superbowls.
The 2012-2013 Centennial TV Team won the Baltimore Metro Championship for the fifth time against Hammond High School and Dulaney High School (525 to 470 to 380 respectively) on May 11, 2013 (aired on WJZ TV on June 29, 2013).
